Prof. Chaves Participates in the Big Data for Health Conference as Workshop Rapporteur

Prof. Mary Gretchen F. Chaves participated in the “Big Data for Health Conference and Workshops for the Asia-Pacific” last 4 and 5 July 2017 held at the Harolds Hotel, Cebu City.  Co-organized by the Asia eHealth Information Network, the University of the Philippines Manila and UP Cebu hosted the conference together with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.  The meeting gathered experts in big data and analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning where they shared their latest researches, efforts, technologies in the area of health information, medical education, and industry collaborations.

Prof. Chaves served as the rapporteur in one of the workshops entitled “Datathon to support Cross-Disciplinary Education and Research,” mentored by Dr. Tom Pollard (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and co-facilitated by Dr. Stephanie Ko (National University Hospital of Singapore) and Dr. Mataroria Lyndon (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health).  In the workshop, the participants were exposed to the datathon methodology, where they collaborated with each other in teams, and tackled real clinical issues and problems where healthcare analytics are supposed to be modeled to provide solutions.

On the same month, Prof. Chaves flew to Cagayan de Oro City to facilitate a training/workshop on interdisciplinary research proposal writing on 26 – 27 July 2017 at the Dynasty Court Hotel.  The activity was participated by 19 faculty members mostly from higher education institutions. The two-day training covered issues on general research proposal writing, but with emphasis on interdisciplinary research.  The objectives of the said training included the following: to learn a new framework for interdisciplinary research, to design research proposals for interdisciplinary research, to explore fund grants for interdisciplinary research, and to learn strategies to pass the requirements of research funders.   The training/workshop was organized by the Asian Association for Interdisciplinary Research Inc.

Prof Juni Cinco attended the three-day training on “Forecasting and Time Series Analysis” taught and held at the National Engineering Center (NEC), UP Diliman. This training involved the discussion of several forecasting techniques and the use of R software in facilitating the processing of data for forecasting purposes. At the end of each major topic, an exercise and a case were done to apply what was learned. The picture below shows Prof Cinco with the other attendees.

On 22 July 2017, the MBA program had its freshmen orientation as it starts the new academic year. The orientation covered the rules and policies that each MBA student should know about the program. This activity was also the time that the upperclassmen welcomed the incoming MBA first-year students. Through the orientation, the students were also able to familiarize with the revised MBA program as well as prepare them for the journey ahead.

As an extra boost of motivation, the 2017 MBA graduates, namely Sofia Lou Montanes and Wevarlee Patosa, took time off their busy schedules and provided testimonies through their journey as an MBA student.

To fully commemorate the orientation, the 2017 Elections were conducted to give new faces the opportunity to lead the new academic year. Congratulations to the newly elected AY 2017-2018 MBA Student Council and congratulations to all the first year MBA students! The activity was held at the UP Professional Schools at the SRP.

Enjoy the ride!
