The University of the Philippines Cebu recently celebrated the achievements of its students during the Kaanyag 2024 festivities, with Jhon Mark Yuen and Zaira Sophia Villamala crowned as Mr. and Ms. Kaanyag 2024. Their victories showcased the event’s focus on talent, advocacy, and the spirit of community.

Jhon Mark Yuen, who won multiple awards including Mr. Photogenic, Mr. Popularity, and Best Speaker, delivered a powerful speech that resonated with the audience. He highlighted the need for accessible learning spaces and sustainable livelihoods, stating, “Teach the youth and they will prosper, but the question is: saang lugar matututo, at meron pa bang lugar ang mga estudyante para matuto? The same for the fishermen—teach a man to fish, and you will feed them for a lifetime, but saan mangingisda, at meron pa bang lugar ang mga mangingisda?”

Similarly, Zaira Sophia Villamala, who also earned the Ms. Popularity and Best Speaker awards, inspired the audience with her heartfelt advocacy for balance. She emphasized the importance of rest and self-care in sustaining excellence, saying, “Burnout is not just exhaustion—it’s the breaking point. How can we give honor and excellence if we have no strength and peace of mind? A genuine academic break is not just about rest—it’s about sustaining ourselves to truly embody honor and excellence.”

The Management Circle also shone in group categories, securing the 1st Runner-Up for the Kasadya Award for Most Dynamic Group and the 3rd Runner-Up for the Kaanindot Award for Christmas Lantern and Float.

Earlier in the month, UP Cebu students and leaders came together for the Pag-iwag sa Pasko Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the Oblation Square. Held on December 6, the event featured a symbolic candle lighting and heartfelt messages from the UP Cebu Academic Federation Leaders. Management Circle President Atasha Nicole Bahande delivered a poignant message emphasizing empathy and fairness in leadership. She stated, “We also pray for the processes and rules that govern our school. Lord, help our administration and leadership to listen with empathy and act with fairness, ensuring that every student has a voice and the freedom to express themselves fully and respectfully.”

The Kaanyag 2024 celebrations and the Pag-iwag sa Pasko ceremony highlighted the vibrant and resilient spirit of UP Cebu. These events not only honored individual and group achievements but also underscored the university’s commitment to fostering talent, advocating for balance, and promoting fairness and empathy.
