University of the Philippines Cebu

The University of the Philippines Cebu (UP Cebu) is the eighth Constituent University of the University of the Philippines System. Established on May 3, 1918 as the Junior College of Liberal Arts, it has evolved through several institutional transformations that reflect its growth and expanding role in higher education.

Over the decades, the institution was known by different names, including Cebu College UP (1947), UP Graduate School in Cebu (1963), UP Visayas Cebu College (1987), and UP Cebu College (2010). On September 24, 2010, it gained autonomy as an autonomous college, and on October 27, 2016, it was officially elevated to the status of a Constituent University, becoming the University of the Philippines Cebu.

Located on a 13-hectare campus in Lahug, Cebu City, UP Cebu serves as the flagship UP institution in Central Visayas. In 2018, the university celebrated its centennial, marking a century of academic excellence, public service, and commitment to nation-building.

School of Management

The history of the School of Management (SoM) is closely linked to the development of UP Cebu itself. Commerce was among the original academic programs offered when the institution was established in 1918.

In 1963, the institution began offering the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program in collaboration with UP Diliman’s College of Business Administration, followed by the Master in Public Administration (MPA) program in 1965. The Bachelor of Science in Business Management (BSBM) program was introduced in 1973, strengthening management education in the region.

As enrollment in management-related programs grew, the UP System recognized management education as a flagship area of the campus. Following organizational changes brought about by the creation of UP Visayas in 1986, the academic unit evolved from the Management Division to the Business Management Cluster in 2010.

With UP Cebu’s elevation to Constituent University status in 2016, the Business Management Cluster was officially renamed the School of Management. Since then, the School has continued to advance its mission of developing competent, ethical, and innovative leaders who contribute to sustainable development and public service.
