The UP Cebu School of Management (SoM) welcomed its BS Management and BS Accountancy freshies during the undergraduate orientation held on August 10, 2026, marking the beginning of another academic journey for the newest members of the SoM community.
The day began with the university-wide orientation for incoming students at the Performing Arts Hall (PAH). In the afternoon, the BS Management and BS Accountancy freshies gathered for the School of Management orientation, where they were introduced to the SoM community, its faculty and staff, academic policies, and the values and expectations that will guide them throughout their undergraduate journey.

The highlight of the afternoon program was the message of VP Professor Tiffany Adelaine Tan, who shared three thoughts that she hoped would guide the freshies throughout their years in the University and as they prepare to become future professionals and leaders: to recognize that being in UP is both a privilege and a responsibility, to never stop learning, and to live a life of honor, excellence and service.
She first reminded the freshies that studying at UP is a privilege that should never be taken for granted. As mga Iskolar ng Bayan, they benefit from an education supported by the Filipino people. This privilege carries a corresponding responsibility: their goal should extend beyond earning a degree or building successful careers. The knowledge and opportunities they gain from the University should ultimately be used to serve the Filipino people and contribute meaningfully to the country.
Second, VP Tan encouraged the students to never stop learning. The freshies are entering the fields of management and accountancy at a time when technology continues to evolve, artificial intelligence is transforming industries, globalization connects people and organizations across borders, and consumer behavior and business models continue to change. While the University will equip them with fundamental principles, theories, and frameworks, she emphasized that one of the most important abilities they can develop is the capacity to continuously learn – to ask good questions, conduct research, critically evaluate information, and discover new knowledge.
Finally, she challenged the freshies to live a life of honor and excellence in the service of the nation. Honor and excellence, she emphasized, should not be pursued solely for one’s reputation or personal success; both must ultimately be directed toward serving the Filipino people. The country needs more than graduates with technical knowledge. It needs leaders with character, managers who care about people, entrepreneurs who create opportunities for others, and public servants who place the nation’s welfare above personal gain.

As our BS Management and BS Accountacy freshies begin their UP Cebu journey, may them embrace the privilege and responsibility of being Iskolar ng Bayan, remain committed to lifelong learning, and pursue honor, excellence and service.
The School of Management looks forward to supporting its newest members as they learn, grow, and pursue their aspirations at UP Cebu.
Welcome to SoM, freshies! Find your own path, keep learning, and make your journey meaningful. Padayon mga Iskolar ng Bayan!
